St Laurence Church Tapestry Commission

It was a year ago that I was asked if I would be interested in making a tapestry for St Laurence Church in Cambridge. I was interested but uncertain about my how I would approach a religious setting and in particular an area as sensitive as either side of the cross. The two tone background colour of the wall was also very challenging.

After months of discussion with church members and clergy a design was agreed and I started work in February and last weekend the tapestry was installed and blessed at Mass on Sunday 10th. I was surprised, as someone now outside the church but brought up in the Protestant faith, by how moved I was by seeing my work as a living thing at the very heart of a church community. The service was open and joyful with all nationalities and ages in the congregation.

I am my harshest critic but the tapestry came to life as I had intended on the wall. I had only seen the weaving close up for months and was working on an effect that needed to have an impact from a distance without dominating the cross.I didn’t know for certain how it would look until it was installed. A very nervous experience. I went to the Pub afterwards for a drink!

Thank you to my good hosts Joe and Petra Tucker and Father Pat for their support.
