A knitted garden for Whickham Library

August 2, 2013

In December last year I was asked by Gateshead Arts Team if I was interested in leading a knitting project with the local community at Whickham Library to create a knitted garden. In the depths of winter this sounded like the craziest idea. But I like crazy ideas.

We started in January with meetings every Thursday morning and soon a regular group of knitters started to come and create a garden through a long dismal winter and spring when nothing was growing. But by July when the garden officially opened the sun had come out and what was an ugly disabled ramp blossomed with knitted colour and life.

I encouraged them not use patterns but to use their imaginations and create wild and wacky and beautiful flowers and plants  – and they did! The children from the local primary school made finger knitted lollipop flowers and the girls studying textiles at Whickham school made sunflowers and butterflies.

I loved working on this  project. It brought so many smiles of pleasure to peoples faces. So many of our valued libraries have closed down through cuts in spending and so it is great to see this little library pulling a community together and flourishing against the odds. Most of all I am so pleased that although I have finished this project the knitting group is continuing and planning their next ‘crazy’ project.

Working in wood

June 17, 2013

This is my good friend Veronica Bell who works with English wood to make beautiful functional and sculptural objects.

I went to see her yesterday as it was the final day of her exhibition in the Potting Shed at Shepherds Dene. A lovely location in an old walled garden that is part of an Edwardian estate just outside Newcastle. The green of the countryside was breathtaking.

Knitted Spring Flowers

May 9, 2013

A pot full of sunshine! I love them.

These lovely finger knitted flowers were all made by YR 5 children at Front Street Primary School in Whickham. I spent the day there on Tuesday showing them how to finger knit. It was hectic but  all 56 children got a chance to make a flower.

These flowers are going to be part of project I am working on just now to create an outdoors knitted garden for the local library in Whickham. Lovely and a bit crazy!
